What Are Embedded Thumbnails?

When your camera saves a RAW file, it also generates a JPEG preview and embeds it inside the file. This thumbnail is what you see on your camera's LCD screen. It is typically a medium to full-resolution JPEG that represents the camera's own processing of the RAW data, including its default color profile, white balance, and sharpening settings.

Why Extract Thumbnails?

Extracting the embedded thumbnail is dramatically faster than performing a full RAW-to-JPEG conversion. If you need quick previews for sorting, sharing on social media, or building a contact sheet, the embedded JPEG is often more than sufficient. The process takes milliseconds per file, making it ideal for reviewing hundreds of images from a shoot.
